Wall Dogs: The Midair Muralists Who Paint New York

It’s 8am in Soho, the thermometer reads just above freezing, and the sky is bleak. Taxis splash down the streets; New Yorkers stride with their heads down, leaping over puddles, carelessly bumping into each other. Everyone wants to get out of the cold, out of the rain, into the warmth.

Ten stories above — on a long, skinny platform hanging from the facade of a building at Canal and Mercer in downtown Manhattan — it’s a different story. Climbers’ ropes secured around their torsos, Jason Coatney and Armando Balmaceda stand in a melange of open paint cans and brushes. These two muralists of Colossal Media, the largest hand-painted advertising company in America, are heavily layered in sweatshirts and raincoats. But in this industry, c’est la vie. Paintbrushes in their fingerless-gloved hands, earbuds in their ears — “I like to start out with Miles Davis in the morning,” Coatney smiles, his breath visible in the frigid air — they begin yet another workday in the sky.

A Day with New York City’s Pothole Repair Crew

Each morning, at a small depot tucked away under the Williamsburg Bridge, the New York City workers who call themselves the “pothole gang” pore over a giant spreadsheet known as “The Daily Pothole.” On it are thousands of potholes all over the city: giant gorges caused by rain and sleet, small interconnected divots that can flatten tires, and pretty much every other roadway wound you can imagine. The sun is barely up, and yet for these men — members of a street maintenance team tasked by the Department of Transportation with roadway repair — the race has already begun.

This video series is a real gem!

1) Storytelling is built upon anecdotes/sequences. “I did this. And then he said this to me. And I was like ‘What the hell’”.

Sequence builds suspense. Through this process you draw the viewer in by having them ask “WHY”. You need to be constantly throwing out questions for the viewer and gradually giving out answers.

2) In addition to sequence, stories should also have a MOMENT OF REFLECTION. Why is this story important? What is the point to this story?

3) When you first start out, you have great TASTE but a poor quality of work. To close the gap, create a situation for yourself where you can do a lot of work. The more work you do, the better you’ll get. And then every so often you’ll get lucky and produce something amazing.

4) In a good story there is a blend between moments of reflection and anecdotes. Some action occurs. Then someone says something about it. More action occurs and then someone says something about it.

5) When you’re producing something, don’t try to be or talk like you think professional radio/tv should sound like. Be yourself. Talk like yourself. Talk like a human being.

6) Don’t just talk about yourself. Interaction with other people creates the drama.

Minka-Birdling Films

A film about place and memory, a farmhouse in Japan, and the lives of the people who called it home.

Watching the short, I couldn’t help but notice how peaceful the mood of the film was. I loved how the director used long takes and scenes of nature as transitions between different moments in the film. Such moments really capture the warmth and beauty of the Japanese countryside as well. This film is a beautiful meditation on life and friendship and a great story.

Marlowe by Alchemy Creative

A wonderful interactive graphics video courtesy of The Center of Investigative Reporting.

This video is cool for multiple reasons. This past weekend, I had the pleasure of spending the weekend at my friend’s Taoist temple. One of the lectures that we heard was all about the benefits of a vegetarian diet. Before listening to the lecture, I was under the impression, that being a vegetarian was a benefit only to one’s health. However, I later learned that it is also extremely helpful to the environment as well! I felt like this video did a great job of really summarizing the issue in a clear and concise manner.
This video is also cool cause it was created by the Center for Investigative Reporting, which I just passed by a couple minutes ago on my way back from the BART! Can’t wait to see what else they produce in the future!

WTF with Marc MaronI’m not much of a comedy junkie but I...

WTF with Marc Maron

I’m not much of a comedy junkie but I can’t stop listening to this podcast! At first glance, it might seem like a normal weekly interview show with famous comedians stopping by each week to tell their funny stories and plug their projects. But I think what really makes this show different from the others is it’s host, Marc Maron.

He’s struggled for years in the comedy business, never fully making it. He’s cocky at times, jealous, and often assuming the worst, yet it’s his honesty about his insecurities that really makes the show work. He’s an open book and leaves nothing to hide, and as a result, his guests feel that they can be themselves around him as well.

Although it’s a podcast about comedy, a lot of times the best and most memorable moments are the serious ones. Marc really shines as an interviewer and is really able to tap into the past memories, philosophies, and vulnerabilities that seem integral to each comedian’s experiences.

A stand-out episode is definitely the Robin Williams episode. I’ve sometimes found it hard to connect to Williams’ comedic style. He’s always seemed very cartoon character to me and ultimately hard to read what his true intentions are, but in this podcast he lays it all out there. His struggles to stay sober, his contemplations on suicide, and his fear of people seeing his true self. it’s painful and hard to listen to at times but at the same time it feels so refreshing to hear real talk and not the sugar-coated Hollywood publicist speak.

In another episode, Judd Apatow describes his fear of letting himself experience joy after years of struggling to achieve it.

If you’re looking for raw, honest conversation with talented people, this podcast is definitely a must-listen.

linnylinh:

This is someone dying while having an MRI scan. Before you die, your brain releases tons and tons of endorphins that make you feel a range of emotions. Tragically beautiful.

Every time I just watch it for so long.

Watch all the graphs on the right go straight. This is crazy.

Yeah, because it’s not real you fucking dumbass assholes. It’s from the first season of The Walking Dead. The lady did die while in the scanner, BUT IT WAS COMPLETELY FICTIONAL, the bitch turned into a zombie three hours later.

::Gob voice:: COME ON!

But I do remember watching a documentary about this. It’s true.
And, the last organ to shut down is our ears.

The results published last month found that the depressed kids were the most intense Web users, chewing up more hours of email, chat, video games, and file sharing. They also opened, closed, and switched browser windows more frequently, searching, one imagines, and not finding what they hoped to find.”

-

A film on Life, Death, and Synchronized Swimming

I know what you’re thinking. an inspirational story about senior citizens who make it to the olympics of synchronized swimming. Or at least that’s what i thought.

Little did I know that this video would be about so much more and go in directions I never conceived of, putting a face not only to the world of senior citizen synchronized swimming but also to the ‘legalize marijuana’ support faction.

But that’s the thing I love most about great journalism. It flips stereotypes on their heads, exposes the world to a multitude of perspectives, and if you’re lucky… hits right into the emotional core of what makes life worth living.

Another piece of brilliant storytelling from the California is a Place crew!

can you imagine an open filming set?

a place where anyone could go, learn about the piece, participate, and help the project grow?

just another static thought
